Dreams to Reality - The Real Purpose of Capital Funds
While our annual funds are used as you might manage your household budget, we invest our capital funds as you would invest in "the big stuff" - college plans for your children, braces, special family vacations and events, and similar responsibilities.
Recently, three extraordinary opportunities have come our way, allowing us to convert our dreams to reality.
The first, an opportunity to double our teaching space, occurred when our Board of Trustees accepted an offer to acquire the Episcopal Church Home across the street from Old Main. Our program expansion had left us not an inch to spare, and we are delighted that through our Capital Campaign Building Fund we have added to our campus The Gabrielle Parker Hubbard Humanities Center, renovated it along with Old Main, and installed a redesigned playground and multi-purpose assembly space. At last (and alas, probably only temporarily) our teaching space matches our expanded programs.
Our second opportunity had been a dream for many years. Our outstanding teachers make a personal sacrifice in order to teach at our school, accepting compensation below the level at peer institutions. Our teachers give their best to help our students become their best. Giving their expertise, their education, their talent, and a good portion of their personal free time to ensure that each student is seen, heard, nurtured, and uniquely discovered, we must take steps to bridge the compensation gap and empower our teachers, who empower our students, to thrive in our school. The Baldwin Fund for Faculty, named in honor of former Head of School Bart Baldwin, and the educational legacy he treasured, creates endowment income to enable The Williams School to attract, value, and retain the best and brightest talents and teachers.
Most recently, our Board of Trustees has established a new fund, The Heritage Fund, to preserve the unique school home setting which is one of the hallmarks that sets our school apart and defines who we are and who we shall remain. Our students receive extraordinary opportunities for learning, which must be supported by financial resources. Our campus is truly unique and requires annual investment to safeguard its historic importance. The Heritage Fund was established by the Board of Trustees to acknowledge and honor in perpetuity Mrs. Hubbard’s visionary gift for student programs and campus maintenance and expansion, which currently includes the Gay Parker Hubbard Humanities Center. This unrestricted asset fund will continue the legacy of excellence, integrity, and responsibility that is our tradition, that defines our present action, that will shape our future, and that is the essence of our school motto since our founding in 1927, Honor before Honors.
