It is our sincere belief that children should attend school dressed for the work of learning. Appearance influences performance, self-image, and behavior, so students are expected to be well groomed and to dress neatly. The Williams School frequently receives compliments on the appearance of our students, and we enlist the support of parents in continuing this tradition.
•Appearance should never distract from the learning process.
•Personal hygiene and neatness are expected.
•Hairstyles and hair color may not distract from the learning process.
•Boys' hair may not touch the collar or extend below the brow line.
•Girls' hair must be natural in color (no pink, blue or green), and the style should not distract from learning .
•Students may not have visible tattoos.
•Hats and other headgear are not to be worn in the buildings.
•Make-up should be subdued and appropriate, with perhaps lip gloss, allowed for girls in the 7th and 8th grades only.
•Heavy coats and jackets are not to be worn in the classroom.
•Students may wear Williams School sweatshirts, fleece or a sweater in class.
•Students may have up to 2 discreet earrings per ear lobe. No other body piercing is allowed. For safety reasons, no large, dangling earrings or hoops should be worn to school. We may also require students to remove earrings during recess or physical education classes.
•Chains, other than costume jewelry, are not to be worn on school grounds.
•Clothes that are frayed, cut, torn or have holes are not permitted.
•No large manufacturers' logo or brand name may be visible.
•Shorts/Pants - All students may wear pants and shorts of an appropriate length and properly hemmed. During hot weather, walking shorts are permissible, four (4) inches above the knee, maximum, loosely cut. Neither shorts nor pants should not be made of "play" materials, such as denim, camouflage, or material used to make athletic shorts and lounging wear. Shorts and pants must fit and be secured at the waist with a belt. Oversized pants and shorts ("bagging/sagging") create distractions and are unacceptable. Tight-fitting pants (e.g., tights, bicycle pants, spandex) are not permitted.
•Shirts - All students may wear collared shirts or turtle necks. Shirts with tails should be tucked in.
•Belts - Students in the 4th through 8th grade should wear a belt with all clothing designed to be worn with belts,. Extra long belts are not permitted. Belts must be put through the belt loops on the pants.
•Footwear-- All children may wear tennis shoes, loafers, and other casual shoes. For safety reasons, shoes should have low (1 inch or less)or no heels and a heel-strap. Students should wear socks (or stockings for girls in grades 5-8).
•Skirts and dresses - girls may wear skirts and dresses of an appropriate length, maximum of four (4) inches above the knee. Skirts may NOT be rolled at the waist. Girls may also wear collarless blouses with finished necklines. This precludes casual T-shirts and blouses that have printed pictures and T-shirt type appliqués on them. They may wear sleeveless blouses and dresses if they have arm widths extending to the shoulder and conservatively cut armholes (no spaghetti straps or tank tops).
DRESS CODE VIOLATIONS
Teachers will alert children to dress code violations. As the child matures, sanctions for inappropriate dress increase as well. In the middle grades, if a student comes to school with an inappropriate article of clothing, or is missing a belt or another item, or in the discretion of the staff, is not appropriately dressed:
First, parent will be notified either in writing or on telephone.
If violations continue, a parent will be called and requested to bring a change of clothing.
For chronic offenders, the school reserves the right to limit dress code options, such as requiring a uniform dress based on a limited clothing selection, or developing an appropriate sanction specific to the infraction. In addition, the students in grades 6-8 may be asked to appear before a council of their peers to reflect on the dress code.
